Does travel insurance cover paragliding?
Almost never. Standard policies exclude free flight in a clause listing "hang gliding, paragliding, parachuting". You need a policy that names paragliding and covers helicopter evacuation.

Check your policy for the exclusions list. In the overwhelming majority of ordinary travel policies you will find paragliding named there alongside hang gliding and parachuting, which means you are uninsured for exactly the hour that carries the risk.
What you need is a policy that (a) names paragliding as a covered activity, (b) covers helicopter evacuation and repatriation, and (c) has a limit that makes sense in a country where mountain rescue is a helicopter charter rather than a public service. Specialist aviation-sports insurers and national paragliding federations both sell this; club membership in Germany, Switzerland, France and the UK often includes a version of it.
For tandem passengers this matters less legally — you are a passenger, not a pilot — but the exclusion still applies to you. For the vol-biv expedition we ask to see the actual policy document before departure, not your word for it, and we have turned people away over it.
