First flight

• How much does paragliding in Kyrgyzstan cost?
  $170 for a tandem flight in Karakol or Bishkek, $299 for the high-altitude flight from 3,040 m. Both include transfer, all equipment and video.
• Is paragliding in Kyrgyzstan safe?
  Low-incident, not zero-risk. The two things that decide it are the pilot's currency and the willingness to cancel — and the honest local factor is that serious-trauma hospitals are in Bishkek, six to seven hours from Karakol.
• Do I need any experience to fly?
  None. A certified pilot flies the wing, you sit in front and take four or five steps at launch.
• What are the weight and age limits?
  40–100 kg for the standard flight, 40–95 kg for the high-altitude one. Minors fly with a parent present.
• What should I wear and bring?
  Trousers, closed shoes with ankle support, one layer more than the town needs. Nothing handheld — no cameras, no selfie sticks.
• How long is the flight actually?
  10–20 minutes in Karakol, 15–25 from the 3,040 m launch, 5–15 at Chon-Tash near Bishkek. Everything else in the two hours is driving, waiting and packing.
• Can I paraglide on a day trip from Bishkek?
  Yes, at Chon-Tash, 45 minutes from the city, $170. Be aware those flights are short — 5 to 15 minutes. Karakol is the better flying and a 6–7 hour drive away.
• Karakol or Bishkek — where should I fly?
  Karakol for the flying, Bishkek for the convenience. Karakol gives two to four times the airtime and a far better view; Bishkek gives you a flight on a day you already have.

• When is the best time to paraglide in Kyrgyzstan?
  September. Stable air, high visibility, thermals still strong enough for distance, the lake still warm — and the Alpine season is over, so you are not choosing Kyrgyzstan instead of Annecy.
• Does travel insurance cover paragliding?
  Almost never. Standard policies exclude free flight in a clause listing "hang gliding, paragliding, parachuting". You need a policy that names paragliding and covers helicopter evacuation.
• What happens if the weather cancels my flight?
  Full refund, or rebooking on any other day of your stay — your choice, on any product. We do not keep deposits for weather.
• How do I get to Karakol, and to the launches?
  Bishkek Manas (FRU) is the airport. Karakol is 6–7 hours by road, Suusamyr 3. Launch transfers are included in every product we sell.

For pilots

• What rating and experience do I need for an XC trip here?
  XC safari: IPPI 4 or national equivalent, 100+ hours, independent thermalling. Vol-biv: IPPI 5, 300+ hours, 50 km personal best, SIV within two years.
• How does retrieval actually work here?
  A 4x4 and driver for the day, radio in the car on your frequency, LiveTrack watched from base. Pickups run 10–30 min in the Chui valley and 90 min to 3 h from the far end of Suusamyr. Some side valleys a vehicle cannot enter at all.
• How far can you actually fly in Kyrgyzstan?
  Publicly registered best flights are 110–120 km over the last two seasons, mostly from Chon-Tash and Too-Ashuu in June and July. Trip reports talk about 250 km being possible; nobody has registered it.
• Can I bring my own wing, and what about gear transport?
  Yes — the pilot programmes assume your own equipment. Fly into Bishkek Manas (FRU), declare the bag as sports equipment, pack the reserve in the bag. We move and store bags between Bishkek, Karakol and Suusamyr.
• Is free flight legal here? Permits and airspace?
  Yes, and there is no public airspace app for the country. Border-zone permits are needed near the Chinese frontier, and national flight bans are occasionally imposed at short notice for state events.
• Kyrgyzstan or Nepal, Turkey, Bir Billing — which should I fly?
  Not Kyrgyzstan in July if you can reach the Alps. Kyrgyzstan wins in September, and it wins outright on emptiness — no fences, no cable cars, no other gliders. Pokhara and Ölüdeniz win on infrastructure and price.
• Where should I base myself for cross-country in Kyrgyzstan?
  Chon-Tash, 45 minutes from Bishkek. Almost every top flight registered in the country starts there, and it is the cheapest serious flying to reach in Central Asia. Too-Ashuu for the longest lines, Karakol for the second week.
